Numerous hiking tracks surround Turangi such as Lake Rotopounamu, the Tongariro river trail and the red hut river trail with spectacular views all round. Turangi offers a variety of established restaurants, Lakeland house which sits on the southern shores of Lake Taupo is popular for both locals and visitors.

With a population of around 4500, and deeply rich in history and culture, Turangi is home to the people of Ngati Tuwharetoa.
